EDITORS NOTE: Voices of Conscience is a 10-part series highlighting the work of volunteers in our community. We hope running it during the holidays will spur others to act in unselfish ways.
On Dec. 13, a woman came to Life Community Church to pick up her order from Angel Food Ministries. The organization provides boxes of food at $30 apiece, about half the retail value of the food.
Since the woman was a regular, she was asked if she wanted to go ahead and place her order for next month, said Mindy McSmith,

The Columbus Dispatch - "Churches prepare to provide Thanksgiving"
|
As a mother of six, Glenny Rodriguez is accustomed to feeding a lot of mouths. The number will only go up on Thanksgiving, when the Whitehall woman is hosting a group of more than 20 for dinner. Rodriguez, 29, is unemployed, so buying food is no easy expense.
Luckily, she volunteers as a Spanish translator for a food ministry at Whitehall Church of the Nazarene which, in turn, provides her family with groceries. The church is a host site for Angel Food Ministries, a Georgia-based nonprofit that sells boxes of food worth as much as $70 to $90 for $30.

The Buffalo News - "Food: a gift from 'angels'"
|
Darlene Davis brought along a laundry basket rather than a cart.
And instead of strolling the aisles of a supermarket, she cruised from table to table in a few minutes,
filling the basket with individually wrapped strip steaks, chicken breasts, ground turkey, frozen green beans and eggs, among a host of groceries.
"You get quite a bit for your money, so it's worth it,” said Davis, who spent $30 on food that would cost in excess of $65 at most supermarkets.
All the Town of Tonawanda resident had to do was step foot into Amherst Church of the Nazarene on a Saturday morning to pick it up.

The News (Salem, Arkansas) - "Feeding families through ministry"
|
Everything is expensive these days with the ever soaring price of gas and oil. Even those who have jobs are having to tighten their budgets, but they and their children shouldn't have to starve. Angel Food Ministry was founded in 1994 by Joe and Linda Wingo, of Monroe, Ga. The city was facing a factory shut down and many of the Wingos' neighbors were jobless. According to www.angel foodministries.com, the couple didn't want to see their neighbors and friends go hungry so they bought food and sold it at a reduced price from their back porch. They were able to feed 34 families that day. Now the Angel Food Ministry has grown to where it can feed up to 500,000 families a month in 35 states. The ministry can sell discounted food to anyone who needs it. There are no forms to fill out or financial qualifications.
